Egregore: By Victor Kannan

Egregore can be simply defined as a collective of a similarly situated, talented and skilled people. In some way it can be called as a group of like-minded people. But it is more than that. In the subtlest sense it is a level of feeling, intuitive action and inner condition. When a group of people are in the same frequency of thought and understanding, communicating and working together become much easier. More is accomplished with less – less instruction, less deliberation and less energy spent.

In Sahaj Marg, there are varying degrees of Egregore. One degree is reached when a certain number of aspirants reach a level of consciousness, say a point of no return. This could be when we reach pind pradesh, or mind region or the point of liberation. But those who have reached this state continue on to the next level of Egregore, say entering the central region, or a state of super-consciousness.

Egregore can also be understood to cause an escape velocity of a movement, or an organizational evolution. So, a certain number of aspirants is needed to form the Egregore.

What is that number? Is it a percentage? Or is it automatic. Once the group is formed, things begin to happen that never happened before. The ease with which work happens makes us wonder, and we ask, what changed? Results begin to show, and we wonder what we are doing differently.

Master Chariji gives the example of churning buttermilk to make butter – all of a sudden, butter forms.

To liken Egregore to freemasons, cults and rituals is a serious mistake. There are so many conspiracy theories about freemasons. It arouses our curiosity, but to what effect or benefit? Suffice it to check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_conspiracy_theories

So, there is a paramount need for correct thinking, which leads to right understanding. Correct thinking comes when the heart’s intentions are pure. With correct thinking and right understanding, we lead a life of positivity and in tune with Nature. This opens us to realizing and imbibing higher principles of life.  The current Master of Sahaj Marg, Shri Kamlesh D. Patel has emphasized this aspect of "Correct Thinking and Right Understanding" and how they are essential in our lives.

Victor Kannan is a Preceptor of SRCM, Sahaj Marg system of spiritual practice.

  1. There is a wonderful sookta or hymn in the Rigveda, the most ancient text in this world. This hymn, in fact the last one of the Rigveda. It requests all the people to assemble in one place and offer Salutation to God. It emphasises the need to have mutual trust, think with one mind, unite all the hearts and work unitedly.
This is what the Masters of Sahaj Marg have been encouraging all of us to practise. This is what Rev. Master Kamaleshji emphasises again and again as Heartfullness.
In this lies the welfare of not only abhyasis but all the human beings and in fact the whole animate and inanimate beings. Everything will be in resonance to His tune.
Though there are so many colours and hues, forms of beauty in Nature, it still manifests the grandeur of the Creator.
Rev. Chariji Maharaj used to call this " Spectrum ".
This is one of the most profound and wonderful contributions of the Masters of Sahaj Marg.

    1. Yes, Chariji Maharaj referred to manifestation of God in the form of a spectrum - good and bad, all coexisting. He said the Source was like the white light which splits up into colours as the individual sees it. The white light is beyond dualities. I have named my blog "The White Light" recalling master Chariji's reminder about the grand unity that we call God. My blog, opened a few days back on the advice of Shri Kamleshji, is at apdurai.com/blog. Please see and guide how the contents could be improved.

  3. This also resembles the concept of universal brotherhood to my mind. In the past liberation or even realization was considered an individual concept. But I think it is only the Masters of Sahaj Marg that have offered the concept of mass ascension.

  5. DEAR VICTOR KANNAN,I ADMIRE YOUR GENIUS IN SELECTING THIS ! AS TOPIC ! TO ME THE CONCEPT OF CONTRASTING OF ORDINARY MAN TO A GREAT MASTER BEING SIMILAR TO AMOEBA BEING CONTRASTED TO A MULTICELLULAR BEING LIKE A MAN ! IN A WAY CHILDHOODS END STORY OF ARTHUR CLARK POINTS TO THIS. WHEN MANY DROPS BECOME AN OCEAN, IT IS MORE THAN AN ADDITION OF DROPS,SOMETHING NEW COMES INTO BEING,IS BIRTHED ! A NEW SPECIES ALMOST ! A DIVINE PRESENCE , A BEAUTIFUL EXISTENCE !

  6. I often used to wonder how does Master permit such wide spectrum of aspirants? As, almost always a system or Master is evaluated based on conduct of its members or disciples and thereby bears brunt of individual's shortcomings. In contemporary competitive scenario it is very common that an organization would not accept a member if it would not contribute to organization's success rate or prestige...even doctors these days deny patients if there is possibility of their rankings going down! Yet, it has been heartwarming that years after years there has always been this varying degrees of egregore in Sahaj Marg - the great Masters being love, have welcomed one and all irrespective of any criteria except for the aspirant's willingness to develop. A presence of wide spectrum of aspirants indicates Heartfulness, where opportunity to evolve is granted so generously and human welfare is still important.

Strange what the Heart aspires to and who has put the aspiration in it.
    I can be a star..
There is still some time though before it becomes a black hole but there is less time and anytime and it all depends on that I know but can't say because it is not me. All I know is that it is not an entity! But due to which every sequence happens from one to the next and ends but the starting and ending point of that non-entity are same which means it is a circle.
Egregore is the circle. It takes many to make the circle. We are bits in it.

  13. We all intuitively understand momentum, and thresholds when crossed, the whole becomes much more than the sum of the individual. In a family, harmony and love make all the difference. For a spiritual organization to have an impact on a larger scale, both numbers and harmony are required. Thanks Mr. Kannan for your blog post - well articulated. Helped me to reflect on this subject.

  14. Very well said. I think the hundredth monkey effect is proof for this egregore Mr. Victor is talking about (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundredth_monkey_effect).

    1. Very well explained,as you always do Br. Kanan.

I specially liked the sentence which says, "Correct thinking comes when the heart’s
      intentions are pure."

As only pure intentions take one to the Realm of God....

      Thank you for the post.

  17. Yes Brother. That's Why our Beloved Master KDP, in the last year, has gifted the Three Sutras in his very first message to all. Right Thinking...., Every thing in the surrounding is Deeply Absorbed in Godly Presence and all Abyasis ate attracted to merge with Master....... He promised that we can feel the difference very shortly. In fact, when I started the practice, the change is instant from the very beginning. The Great Gift from our Beloved Master KDP. Brother, your blog strengthen this effect. Thanks a lot. Ramakrishnan, HCMC, Vietnam

  18. Nicely explained and thank you.
While in 100th monkey effect an effect is triggered after reaching a critical number, the butterfly effect is ascribed to a single random activity which can trigger changes on a grand scale.

  20. From the speech of our Rev. Master Kamlesh Ji, I hear the word "egregore" and felt spiritually that it is a collective energy being created during Group Meditation. Now after reading Brother Kannan's blog post on 'Egregore' , the more I understood about it cognitively.

  26. Egregore - that is what happens in all sahaj marg bhandaras, and Masters are inviting us to gather in large numbers during those special occasions, so that our consciousness is raised to higher level as Babuji Maharaj wishes in Whispers.(to bring a genetic mutation to occur)

  27. Thanks for explaining egregore in sahaj marg context and it's role in triggering phase change of humanity to higher level of consciousness through genetic mutation

  28. Could not understand the correlation of egregore and the notorious conspiracy theories. Egregore can happen wherever there is an assembly of like minded people. Correct thinking, right understanding and honest approach to life are some hallmarks of evolved satvik society. By making these suggestions, our society will surely evolve to such a state.
